By Air
- Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP): Located about 45 kilometers northwest of Milan, Malpensa is the largest international airport in the Milan metropolitan area. It serves as a major hub for international flights. It is connected to the city center by regular train and bus services terminating either at Cadorna FN Station, Garibaldi FS Station, or Centrale FS Station.
- Milan Linate Airport (LIN): Situated closer to the city center, Linate primarily handles domestic and European flights. It is directly connected to the city center through the metro line M4.
- Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY): Also known as Orio al Serio Airport, it’s located around 45 kilometers northeast of Milan and serves as a hub for low-cost carriers. It is connected to the city center by regular bus services typically terminating at Centrale FS Station.
By Train
If you’re arriving from neighboring European countries, you might consider taking a train to Milan. The city is well-connected to major European cities via high-speed rail services. International train services terminates either at Garibaldi FS Station or Centrale FS Station.
By Bus
While not as common as other modes of transport, buses do offer international routes to Milan from nearby countries like Switzerland, France, and Austria.
Metro
Milan boasts an efficient metro system with five lines (M1, M2, M3, M4, M5) that cover most of the city and connect many outlying districts. Trains are fast, frequent, clean, and generally the quickest way to move through Milan’s urban area. Interchanges between lines are well-marked, and service runs from early morning until late evening.
Trams and Buses
Milan’s extensive tram and bus network provides thorough coverage of the city, especially in areas not directly served by the metro. Trams are ideal for reaching specific neighborhoods and for enjoying a more scenic, above-ground route, while buses fill in the remaining gaps and connect many peripheral districts.
Passante Ferroviario (Suburban S-Lines: S1, S2, S5, S6, S12, S13)
Milan’s Passante Ferroviario is a suburban rail system running partly underground through the city center. It is especially useful for medium-distance travel across the metropolitan area and for quick connections between districts not easily linked by the metro.
- Key central stations: Porta Garibaldi, Repubblica, Porta Venezia, Dateo, Vittoria, and Rogoredo (depending on the line).
- Trains run frequently (typically every 15 minutes during the day).
- The Passante is fully integrated into the regular ATM fare system: you can use the same contactless card or tickets as for metro, tram, and bus travel within the urban area.
Suburban lines can be particularly helpful when moving between northern districts (like Bicocca) and central or southern parts of the city, often providing faster connections than the metro.
IMPORTANT: You can conveniently pay for and use your metro, tram, bus, and Passante tickets by simply tapping your credit or debit card on the card readers installed on all buses and trams, as well as on the dedicated turnstiles at metro and Passante stations. Always remember to tap the same card when exiting metro and Passante stations to ensure you are charged the lowest possible fare by the end of the day.
The main venue in Bicocca is well connected to the city center. To reach Università degli Studi di Milano (Via Festa del Perdono), you have several practical options:
Fastest and Most Direct (Metro + Short Walk)
- From Bicocca (metro station Bicocca – M5):
- Take M5 (purple line) toward San Siro.
- At Zara, change to M3 (yellow line) toward San Donato.
- Get off at Missori.
- Walk 7–8 minutes to Via Festa del Perdono.
Total time: ~25–30 minutes.
Alternative Route via Centrale by means of Suburban lines
- From Greco Pirelli train station, take an S-line (S1/S2/S5/S6/S12/S13) on the Passante to Repubblica.
- Walk or transfer to M3 (Repubblica → Missori).
- Walk to Via Festa del Perdono.
Similar travel time: ~30 minutes, sometimes faster at peak hours.
Tram Option (More Scenic, Slower)
- Take tram line 7 or line 31 from Bicocca toward Zara or Lagosta, then switch to metro M3 to reach Missori.
- Good for those who prefer above-ground travel but adds time.
